How to Handle These Common Road Hazards
When we all took driver’s ed back in school, we were taught how to handle common dangers and hazards on the road. But for many of us, that was years ago – and how often do we stop to remember how to respond to these situations? While the safety and driver assist features in our Mazda cars and SUVs can go a long way to keeping you safe, today we wanted to do a refresher on a couple of the most common road hazards and how to deal with them.
Rain and storms can make for particularly poor driving conditions. When this happens, caution is the name of the game. It’s important to keep your Mazda car or SUV further than usual from the car in front of you, since it could take your car longer to slow down and stop on wet pavement. You’ll also want to make sure your wiper blades are new and your windshield is clean since rain can already impede visibility.
Another frequent hazard is potholes. Depending on the size, potholes can range from nuisance to danger, and it’s sometimes hard to tell before you hit it. When you spot a pothole, avoid the temptation to swerve quickly out of the way, which could put you in the oncoming traffic lane. Instead, keep your eyes open and start slowing down as soon as you see a pothole. That way you can drive safely around it if you have an opportunity, or decrease the damage and danger when you pass over it by going at a slow speed.
There are plenty of other hazards on the road, but these tips will help you deal with two of the most common. And to stay safer still, now might be the time for a new car with state of the art safety features, like our 2019 Mazda CX-5 or 2019 Mazda3.
